A considerable amount of today’s startups that are based here in Silicon Valley have most of their core basis all covered. They have the funding, staffing, and infrastructure necessary to successfully launch and scale their business. With all of those advantages at their disposal, research shows Silicon Valley startups now have a 15-20% success rate.

True, that success rate is notably higher than the global average of 10%, but with all of those key advantages that most startup founders could only dream of, you could surmise that the success rate of Silicon Valley startups should be even higher than it is today.

More so than any other issue, startups around the world, not just in Silicon Valley, struggle with succeeding in today’s AI-saturated market because of one thing—their branding.

An issue that hinders their ability to distinguish their brand from their competitors.

The biggest dilemma facing today’s founders

What makes the success rate of Silicon Valley startups so significant, is that it dispels the notion that adequate funding, staffing, and infrastructure is all you need to build a successful startup. But ask any angel investor and they’d tell you, those components may be enough to build the proverbial plane—but it certainly doesn’t determine whether it’ll fly.

If what they say is true, which is that cashflow from sales is the lifeblood of a business, then marketing is the heart that pumps it.

As AI continues to play a more significant role in all of our daily lives, the more consumers tend to become more disconnected from—not just from their peers and reality, but also from brands and their marketing messaging as well. Especially those which lean more heavily on AI.

According to a new study from The Harris Poll, 63% of consumers now say they would be “less likely to purchase from a brand that uses AI-generated ads.”

And with Clutch research showing that 93% of consumers “say it matters that a brand’s communications feel like they came from a real person,” success for startup brands today isn’t contingent upon simply having a huge marketing budget—but rather how their marketing communications connect with their targeted customer base.

Successfully branding your startup in an AI-driven environment

Great branding, even in an AI-driven environment, will always boil down to two things: Being distinctive. And also being emotionally aligned with the interests and values of your target audience.

Here are a few ways to accomplish both:

  • Humanize your brand: Allow your audience to interact with actual human beings at every key touchpoint.

  • Have a BrandFace for your startup: Think of all the publicity that founders like: Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos all generated for their respected brands. Brands whose founders are at the forefront of their business will always have an advantage over those who aren't when it comes to consumer trust.

  • Be up-to-the-minute with contemporary culture: Unless your target audience consists of AARP members, the overwhelming odds are that they care about what’s relevant in pop culture. Which is why your brand should aim to be relevant in the culture as well—by showing that it understands contemporary culture.

Startups that truly stand out and resonate with consumers in a meaningful way in today’s AI-saturated market do all of abovementioned things. If you’d like for Decryption to help your startup do the same, schedule a complimentary client consultation with us today!
