It’s a Saturday morning, and you’re going grocery shopping for an afternoon picnic with friends. Each of your friends have all volunteered to bring a food item to the picnic, and you, being you, eagerly agreed to bring the most convenient item that you could think of—soft drinks.
While walking down the soft drinks aisle of the store, you immediately spot all of the iconic beverage brands that you’ve come to know since childhood.
And although brands like: Coca-Cola, Dr Pepper and Pepsi are all acceptable options for the occasion, on this outing—typical options will not suffice. Instead, you’re looking for something outside of the box that your friends would really find cool and would appreciate. As you approach the end of the aisle, a brand name catches your eye; Culture Pop.
Recalling the soft drink brand’s cool and comedic commercial featuring a group of friends that you just saw on television a few days prior, you instantly place a 12-pack of the sodas in your shopping cart and head for the checkout counter.
Shopping scenarios like this occur far more frequently than you may realize these days. And there’s a reason for that.
Defining aura
Cool means different things to different people. It's say it’s safe to say that what is cool to an 18-year-old college student, may not necessarily be cool to a 60-year-old biologist.
Nevertheless, if there’s one thing that is universally acknowledged about coolness—it’s that cool isn’t asymmetrical; but rather determined accordingly by each individual on a case-by-case basis.
If you were to spend a significant amount of time with Gen Z or Gen Alpha consumers, there’s a very good chance that one of the words that you’d hear mentioned is often is aura.
Similar to cool, aura is a vibe, or rather a confident energy that resonates with others in a way that is almost palpable.
In other words, aura is the new word for swag. And if your brand aspires to appeal to either demographic—it better has plenty of it.
Why aura is so important today’s consumers
Nearly 3.5 million new businesses were added in the United States in the first half of 2026, putting the country on pace to surpass the record 5.7 million new businesses created in 2025.
And while the formulation of so many is a great thing for the entrepreneurial landscape, the downside is that it increases the odds of other brands entering the same market as yours that provide the same products or services to your target audience that your brand has to offer.
Today’s consumers already have an inherent expectation of quality from brands. So attempting to win their business on the quality aspect alone is a moot point. Instead, a better approach is to differentiate your brand by strategically making it a point to exude the kind of energy and image that would resonate most with your target customers.
Keep in mind, consumers do not fall in love with brands because they provide the best products. Consumers fall in love with brands because of the way those brands make them feel.
And brands that make their target audience feel as though the brand represents them—will always have a committed customer base.
